Sensirion launches the SFA40, a new generation of formaldehyde sensor

Sensirion, a global leader in environmental sensing solutions, announced the addition of the SFA40 to its formaldehyde sensor portfolio. The SFA40 represents another breakthrough in electrochemical sensing technology from Sensirion, offering outstanding performance in a compact form factor. Mass production is expected to begin in early 2025.

Formaldehyde is commonly found in wooden furniture, floors, paints and cosmetics and is a harmful indoor pollutant. To meet the challenge of low-concentration formaldehyde detection, Sensirion has developed the highly sensitive and selective SFA40 formaldehyde sensor, which measures only 10 x 13 x 2.4 mm³ and can detect formaldehyde concentrations as low as tens of ppb. It can also accurately distinguish harmful formaldehyde in environments where other volatile organic compounds (VOCs, such as alcohol) are present. Its energy-saving design is ideal for battery-powered devices, ensuring extended operating life without compromising performance. Based on the successful experience of the SFA30, the SFA40 maintains precise digital, fully calibrated and compensated output throughout the life of the sensor.

Sensirion is committed to providing first-class quality and performance. The SFA40 is designed, manufactured and calibrated in Switzerland to ensure that it meets higher quality standards, and customers do not need to perform additional calibration. At the same time, we are also focusing on third-party certification to verify the accuracy of the SFA40 sensor.
The SFA40 will be put into mass production in early 2025. Dr. Olga Kuemin, Product Manager of Sensirion Formaldehyde Sensors, said: "I hope that SFA40 will allow more people to experience our innovative research results in the field of formaldehyde detection. During the product development process, we fully considered the needs of end users and optimized the cross-sensitivity of indoor volatile organic compounds such as ethanol to achieve ultra-low cross-sensitivity, and it is small in size and low in power consumption. Whether it is integrated into an indoor air quality monitor, air purifier or air conditioner, the SFA40 can provide highly reliable results."

SFA40 Formaldehyde Sensor Overview:
*Miniature design (10 x 13 x 2.4 mm3)
*High sensitivity and selectivity (<0.3% ethanol cross-sensitivity)
*Ultra-low current consumption (80µA on average, lower power modes under development)
*Cost-effective for high-volume applications
